My husband and I had been on the cog railway to and from Wengen, our lovely mountain village base, a few times. We had hiked hills and valleys and photographed Switzerland’s natural beauty and the tidy Swiss lifestyle. Guesthouse bound on our last day, we were lucky to find window seats on the train. I set my camera, a Panasonic Lumix superzoom, for a wide angle shot with maximum depth of field hoping for “just one more” photo-op. As the train slowly wound up the mountain, the iconic valley view – this time uniquely bathed in golden alpine light with a perfectly placed cloud to balance and enhance the composition – presented itself. I braced myself against the (open) window frame, held my breath and slowly pressed the shutter release once.

I had my own version of alpenglow when, back at home, my lucky shot, seen full sized, was one of my best from our trip to Switzerland.

About the author

Eva Baughman has loved studying and practicing photography since buying a second hand Nikkormat SLR when she was first out of college. Photography took a secondary role while she raised a family and worked as a pastry chef and as a recipe tester. When her nest emptied, her passion to create images was reignited. Now it’s with a Pentax DSLR, a Fujifilm X-T1 and in the digital darkroom. She especially enjoys travel and nature photography, has exhibited in New Hampshire, and has had her photos published by the New York Times for food-related stories.
